Our new paper, Open Veins of AI Auditing, documents a stark governance gap: AI deployment across the Global South now matches — and in some sectors exceeds — deployment in parts of the Global North, backed by hundreds of documented public-sector algorithms and multibillion-dollar national government investments; yet over the past decade, fewer than twenty independent audits of deployed AI systems have been published across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, South Asia, and Southeast Asia combined.
